– The PDP group said the increase is a form of extortion
-It also blamed president Buhari for harsh economic policies
– Labour would next Monday (February 8) hold a nation-wide mass protest
A group within the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) has kicked against the increased electricity tariff by the All
Progressive Congress (APC) led federal government.
The group, Peoples Democratic Party National Youth Frontier (PDPNYF) said there should be no increase in electricity tariff without improved electricity supply.
“It is unreasonable and defiles common sense for the APC government to increase electricity tariff now that the electricity supply is not in any way doing better. There is no logic in this decision” Usman Okai Austin, the group’s national coordinator told Naij.com
Speaking further, he said increasing tariff in the present economic hardship Nigerians are experience amount to extortion.
“It is wisdom for the APC government to improve on electricity supply first before discussing tariff and even at that it should be subject to public deliberation and Nigerians should be made to understand why there should be increase.
“Nigerians are suffering in the hands of the APC government; the government that is only good at increase in tariff, establishment of the various taxes without justification is worrisome.
“Therefore we advise the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure improvement in electricity supply first,” he added.
Austin said the Economic policies of the present government have meted hardship and more suffering on Nigerians.
“Last month the government increased the pump price of Kerosene after introducing 50 Naira stamp in the Bank transaction, this is a very bad precedent,” he noted.
Meanwhile, labour and members of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) would next Monday (February 8) hold a nation-wide mass protest and shut down the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Generating Electricity Companies (GENCOs) and the Distribution companies (DISCOs) over the increased electricity tariffs.
