– PDP governors hail Supreme Court judgment
– The governors said the court was the saviour of democracy
– They congratulated the governors for their victory at the Supreme Court
Governors belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are happy with the decision of the Supreme Court which recently upheld the election of all its governors.
In a statement on Wednesday, February 3, the PDP Governors’ Forum described the apex court as the saviour of democracy in the country, Premium Times reports.
They were reacting to the court’s ruling on the elections of Governors Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and Okey Ikpeazu of Abia state. The ruling by the apex court follows the December 18th Appeal Court ruling which nullified the election won by Governor Udom and the decision of the Court of Appeal, which nullified Mr. Ikpeazu’s election on December 31, 2015.
The governors said the apex court’s verdict which was in their favour have reinforced the belief that the judiciary remains the hope of the common man.
The statement which was signed by Osaro Onaiwu, coordinator of the Forum read: “What the apex court has done was to save the country from being balkanised by the APC in its avowal to undermine the integrity of the courts and jettison the sacredness of the ballot box.”
Onaiwu congratulated the governors for their victories, saying the PDP would keep working to strengthen the country’s legal process as well as democratic norms.
He also urged states like Edo and Ondo whose elections would hold later in the year to identify with the PDP so they can reap the dividends of democracy.
This comes few days after the Supreme Court upheld the election of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state. The apex court’s judgement was unanimous, thus, validating the result of the April 11 poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The court also affirmed Chief Dave Umahi and Ibikunle Amosun as governors of Ebonyi and Ogun states respectively.
