Former Education Minister, Ibrahim Shekarau, denied reports of defection.
The immediate-past minister of education under former president Goodluck Jonathan, Ibrahim Shekarau, has denied reports that he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a new political party.
Premium Times reports that, Shekarau’s denial was contained in a statement issued, on Monday, January 1, by his spokesman, Ghali Sadiq.
According to the statement, Shekarau, who is a former governor of Kano state, never suggested the idea of leaving the PDP for any party.
The media reported that, Shekarau, was planning, alongside some other members of PDP, to form a new party as the crisis in their party “reached an irredeemable dimension.”
The PDP stalwart said the story was nothing but “a calculated attempt to further polarize the PDP.”
Shekarau’s spokesman disclosed that the former minister had just finished an assignment of finding lasting solutions to the party’s problems, and insisted that he has no plan to abandon the country’s major opposition party.
He said Shekarau, who is a member of a 15-man committee set up by the party to brainstorm and proffer solution to the leadership tussle rocking the party had so far collected over 5,000 memos and submitted their reports to the party.
Reports emerged last week that at least three top PDP chieftains and some other party members have been holding series of meeting to strategise plans to form a new political party.
Daily Trust confirmed that the idea behind the formation of the new party is being spearheaded by Shekarau; one-time deputy Senate president, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu as well as the ex-governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido.
Meanwhile, Shekarau has declared his support for the anti-corruption war propagated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
